Practical travel information

Money
Somaliland’s currency is the Somaliland Shilling and you can exchange money at the airport and at many exchange offices in the cities. US dollars are widely used and can be traded for everywhere. Somalis often pay by phone using a system called Zaad. This is similar to Swedish Swish. There are ATMs, but you should not depend on withdrawing money, but carry what you need in cash. If you need extra money, you can receive money through Western Union and similar companies that have offices in Hargeisa.

Security
The Somalilanders are generally very hospitable and helpful, a large part of the population speaks English and some actually Swedish. The country is classified by the USA as safe to travel in and there are basically no incidents connected to foreign visitors. Crime is very low. When traveling outside of Hargeisa, according to the country’s rules, you must have a guard with you who helps with security issues.

Travel in the country
Travel in the country is generally done by taxi or renting a car with a driver for a few days.
